1.  Sparkle boost from Dragonfly.
2. This covers pretty much everything, as I prefer a treble sort of tone, irrespective of style.  Neck P/U and treble boost is excellent.
3. Just this one, but I use it to 'shunt' other FET-based O/D pedals, and an NYC Big Muff.
4. Very.
5. FETs.  I've tried Ge Rangemasters - and that's what got me started.  Ge wins over Si for me with treble boosters, but FETs are handy when I need a cleaner boost.  It tips a valve amp over the endge just nicely, and cleans up with the guitar's volume pot.
Lots of boosters do this, but this is my preference.  :icon_wink:
6. Not strictly neccesary with FETs, but my Ge / Si choice is to have a 472 (.0047uF) and 103 (.01uF) cap as 'top' or 'full' boost switch. Anything less doesn't let through enough signal, and anything greater tends to go all farty-pants at higher volumes.

Good thread!

That's 6 questions, not 5.   ;)

I use my boosts only as the last thing on the pedalboard, before the amp.  I may use an LPB type, a Sparkle Boost, a Boss EQ, or a CS-3 or Dyna Comp.  Depends on how silly I feel that day.  I've even used a Trotsky there.
The people who work for a living are now outnumbered by those who vote for a living.

They all boost and they all can be frequency shaped.
Jfet, simple and sounds like Jfet, transparent or smooth.
  Bipolar, slightly rougher.
Ge, can be made to distort and/or cause amp to distort, .0047uf is too small for input cap though.
Orange Squeezer cranks amp so speaker/output section can still also compress/distort. I mean more of the time can be spent dirty/compressing when the amp/input is kinda cranked, the comp allows this while keeping the overdistorting under X by compressing lightly what is let into the amp.
Mosfet, clean daddy, clean and strong.
OS, I prefer a little hair in the boost stage, the soft compress is welcome also.
Jfet, can distort or be made clean boost, very nice.
I would use the others if 'less is more' worked out good, Bipolar works just fine, depends on what/how it is used of course.
Opamp, just fine, very clean, some say sterile.
The best match for George is probably not the best match for Steve or Paul.
It really requires ''with this rig'' testing, running the amp through various modes such as w/without boost, various volume settings, switching anything else.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

ohh silly me! Beer can create visions, idea and thoughts ut can also cause amnesia heheheh "6 QUESTIONS"

PS- thanks newfish! this can be an info for people who has questions and doubts!

Here's mind

1. I boost my sansamp either GE rangemaster type depends on my setting, i use Gus' Boost & Ts808 for my high gain setting to boost my adlibs.
2. I use rangemaster type AC128 , Gus Boost and TS808. I've tried mosfet by jack orman and like it a bit but not so much "depends on a players taste"
3. i've got 3 because depends on a song i play
4. Im happy but i need more experiment more im looking something i hear in my mind heheheh but cannot generate yet!
5. Depends on a setting, in high gain setting germanium sounds fuzzy and im not a fan of fuzz
6. mmmhhh 33n, 10n and also 5n i like treble boost !! not really like too much bass like 100n input cap :)

i play in a 3 piece, so i don't really ever need to 'boost' but i will switch to my amps od2 channel if i wanna fill more 'space.'  but the band has an open door policy which basically means that if we aren't prepping for a gig or a recording session, anyone can stop in and play (whether they now how or not).  so i built a little dual boost pedal with jack orman's mini booster and tim escobedo's duende in it. that mini booster will blow the roof off the place if not handled with care.  i also had a good run with ROG's omega in the fx loop of my amp, but only the solid state randall.  anytime i put that thing in the loop of a tube amp and turned it on i got A brown sound, not necessarily the one everybody's looking for.  :icon_eek:

askwho69

Duende? means elf in english hehehe! nice style boog! well brown sound is very creamy to the ear and not so harsh thats why everybody loves it!

Anyone wants to share more?

HA! no problem A2; of course i hope you realize the 'brown sound' i was speaking of was more along the line of 'omg that's so loud i just s#@! myself!' i also put an onboard sho in one of my friday-night-with-the-guys-lets-make-noise guitars. that worked out pretty well.

Brymus

I haven't really found one I like best or need to have so I keep searching.
But I do like a Rangemaster with good Ge over 130 Hfe,.0047 and .022 on switch.
I also like my Omega but it makes other pedals too noisy.
I am thinking an op amp clean boost is going to be what I end up using to add a little db to my leads or what not/drive a FF,ect.
Just seems like the only one that doesnt add too much noise when driving other pedals in the chain.
Even my 808 clone with the clippers lifted and a bass boost is a less noisy boost than most.
I'm no EE or even a tech, just a monkey with a soldering iron that can read, and follow instructions. ;D

Im planning to build opamp clean boost too! +1to rangemaster so creamy!

Le québécois

My first build was a MXR microamp (scheme from tonepad). Good opamp boost and to my ears my tone is almost unchanged by this Fx. My goal is to boost any pedal for soloing but without altering my no-boost sound. This fx is at the very end of my chain.

I did build the rangemaster (ge transistor) on breadboard and was happy with the sound but I think I would prefer a EQ board to change my tone and then feed my booster with that.

My last quest for knowledge is Jfet (they do sound warmer when use as simple buffer) if you compare with opamp. I was playing with that today. So you migth considere them for booster if you are more tubish than solid-statish but be aware that it can distort when use as a booster. I'm actually trying in another thread to get around that.

askwho69

Mmmm jfet is warmer nice info ! i like distorted booster because it adds some gain when adlibs comes it will colorized your tone like brighter, mid or bass it depends on your input cap. . .

Any others want to share with your boosters? "adlib boosters?" this will be a forever info not only for new people also for you!:)

Hahaha Because you only use SUPER HIGH GAIN Rob! if you boost it hiss like surfing you can hear! hehehe :)
