Hi, sorry for the newbie questions.
I just got started using vero board and finding everyhting very useful, but I am unsure of the nomenclature for want of a better word, for which way 'up' pots are in diagrams.
For instance, this layout : http://doctortweek.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/factorydefuzz666-my-mods1.png
similar to other FF type layouts ive seen on here. So hopefully its ok to post that link.
or this: http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g66/Wightywhoop/polarity.jpg
or this : http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=37221&g2_serialNumber=4
and lastly: http://i19.tinypic.com/54l5y8k.png
for instance.

anyway, the pot cartoons, are they from the actual turning part viewed downwards (1 2 3 left to right?) or are they viewed from the "bottom" of the pot (just the flat metal part)?

please help me loose my confusion on this!

They are with the pot shaft facing down. Best way to confirm this is to look at the volume pot in a design. They always go from left to right, with full CC being 0 and Clockwise being max volume. So just check where the ground and the output wires are going to and you'll have your answer.  :icon_biggrin:

thanks for your answer.

so for confirmation, the ground would be on the lug most CC, and the output typically on the lug most CW?
I hope I got that right, you wouldnt beleive I have a university education....(sadly not in elecrtonics)

A good way to figure it out is to imagine rotating a knob. When you turn it, you're moving a slider over the long arc between the two outside lugs, connected to the middle lug. So if turning it clockwise moves the slider towards ground in a volume pot, the middle lug sees less resistance to ground, and you've got it the wrong way. Turning it counter-clockwise should cut the volume, so the pot faces the other direction.

(Pretty much what thedefog said!)
