The world’s LARGEST flanger…

Since Solderman and I have been developing this circuit concurrently, I thought I would post my version of a moded Guyatone FL3 flanger.

And since his is so small and neat,  I thought I would show off my big ole mess to encourage people like me to not let a little mess get in their way...

My quest to build a DIY flanger started when I saw this on E-Bay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/5-x-MN3207-5x-MN3102-chorus-delay-flanger-BBD-chips-IC_W0QQitemZ280477787373QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar_Accessories?hash=item414dc764ed

Which is a fantastic price for the MN3207 and MN3102 and he still has some in stock.

So I looked around for a circuit that was simple enough for me to build on my breadboard, since that has become important to me after building a few cadavers... The Boss version is a lot more complicated, so I was really happy when Solderman just happened to post a schematic in this thread while I was looking around:

http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?PHPSESSID=3e8dd43b9ed93010d25c9d4bc8c45094&topic=82314.0

And which he has concluded here:

My build isn't nearly as elegant, but I thought I would post my docs, and my sound file to give you guys a listen. Notice the changes I have on the schematic. The only issue is that the depth pot can go out of range and start causing the LFO to turn on and off at the extremes. Since I eliminated the resistor that prevented this due to my love of the extremes, you can always play with values if you want to put it back in.

So here are some pics:

Here is my build doc:

And this is me having fun with it.
Settings for the sound clip are:

1st verse    Depth 75% Speed 50% Resonance 10%
2nd verse   Depth 85% Speed 0% Resonance 10%
3rd verse   Depth 75% Speed 85% Resonance 80%
4th verse    Rhythm Guitar  Depth 95% Speed 0% Resonance 95%
Lead Guitar  Depth 85% Speed 0% Resonance 50%

This is a really usable flanger. Go forth and multiply it!

I have heard some people can't listen to the MP3 file. I put it on my Band's MySpace page now. It is the one called........you guessed it, DROP Jet Flanger.

I don't know, I usually buy the expensive 'mojo' electrons, and they can be pretty particular.

Me too, my electrons only like to flow through silver plated oxygen free leads on paper in oil caps.  I can't seem to make them go anywhere else!

Awesome flanger by the way.

I just trick them with fast talk about rewards on the other side of the out jack! :P

...or 'persuade' them with a cattle prod.  No, wait.  That's just more electron to move around.  I'm confused now.

D'oh!

Hi
Stumbled on this tread.
Really grate job. To bread board this one and get it o work is an achievement bigger than shrinking it to a 1950A.
Let's hold the flag high for this flanger. Its the best DIY I've heard so far.

Hey Solderman,

I'm sorry it took you this long to find this thread, since the name was a joke about your "smallest flanger" post... It isn't very funny if you don't even see it! :-\

Anyway, I agree about the quality of the design. I looked long and hard for a DIY-able flanger, and this circuit has made me very happy.

But, your PCB is awesome work. Mine is just the rough and tumble version. But it sounds GREAT!

Yeah, that and dragon's blood capacitors. That's a "killer" combination!  :icon_mrgreen:

This can't be true - I reckon my missus actually own's the world's largest flanger. (& you'd laugh if you saw where the feedback control is mounted)

I don't hear any MP3 file!!!! you made a PCB for this??? re post it!!!!!!
