I love the tube pedal discussion threads. I wondered if the minds here on DIYSB have built a low voltage version of the Echoplex?
The Guyatone TD-X sounds like magic, and looks as though it's adapter powered, but it is a hybrid design. Can I buy what i'm looking for?
Just a low voltage driven tube and an analog delay circuit.
Thanks-

I'm not exactly a tube guy, but...

IMO low voltage tube designs can be cool for overt distortion. But the subtle character of clean high voltage tube circuits is going to be lost when running them at low voltage. I don't think you'd be gaining anything in this application by using tubes.

Similarly, BBDs are cool, I like them, you like them, we all like them, but they aren't the same as tape. So, again in my opinion, low voltage tubes and BBDs are not really going to sound like a tube tape echo box.

So, you can get something that sounds nice. But if you're really into the specific character of a tube Echoplex (there were SS versions I believe), a BBD-based delay is not going to get you exactly what you want.

I honestly think, if you're not particularly concerned about DIY, that you'd get much closer to an Echoplex with something like the Strymon delay than you will with BBDs.
