SHO build: Crackle but no output

I just completed a Dirty Little Secret/SHO build on perfboard, but the SHO side does not work.  I  am hoping to get a little help as to which particular part might not be working.

The DLS side works fine, but when the SHO is engaged, no sound, just crackle/hiss.  Same thing if just the SHO is engaged; no output, just hiss.  The intensity or level of the hiss does not fluctuate if I turn the SHO's volume knob (I'm not sure if it is supposed to or not).

Any ideas as to what might be wrong?  I've heard that the BS170s can be pretty finicky.  Would there be any noise at all if the transistor was shot?

Thanks.

Good news, I got it fixed.  Added solder to a couple of joints and must have gotten lucky.  All seems to be well... for now at least.

Although, there is a bit of a "pop" as the effect is being engaged.  Am I to assume that that is just part of the noisy nature of the pedal?

you need a pull down resistor to stop the popping ;)
