Board Insulation

I just built a new box that's being particularly whacky.  It works perfectly sometimes and then goes completely dead other times.  I suspect the veroboard is shorting out somewhere
as it's a pretty tight fit inside.

What's the best way to insulate the board?  I've seen some pictures with foam underneath the board.  I've seen some with some kind of material wrapped all around the board
and everything secured with a rubber band.  Any suggestions?

Hot glue you say?  Even on the underside of the vero?  I guess there's no turning back after you put that stuff on huh?

I can second the hot glue. Been there, done that... Gristleizer PCB mounted on hot glue.

I also dab hot glue on any socketed components, conecting them to stable components, or to the board itself. That way I'm sure they won't drop out of the socket if I drop the pedal, or something. It's tough, and yet, I'm always able to carefully remove the glue without mishap if I decide to change something. A pair of small wire cutters, and a gentle prying motion does the trick every time. Don't use the industrial strength stuff, just the normal grade is plenty good enough.

I use thin rubber gasket material from a local surplus store. I also salvage pieces of thick clear plastic insulators from old PC power supplies, and such (be sure to grab those heat sinks, too). You can get fairly thin rubber gasket material in the plumbing repair section of Home Depot and probably from an auto supply shop, as well. If you have to attach it to the board, use a glue stick for paper. It's effective and not permanent.

You can scrub hot glue any time you want just with your nail or so - i do it all the time.
