I have a 24vdc/3A power supply that I'm going to use to power a 24vdc/low current preamp. I want to also power a chip amp (12vdc/1A) as well as a separate effect (9vdc/low current). Would a 7812 and a 7809 be what I need? Any other considerations?

Yes, that will work. But keep in mind that you would be running the LM7812 really hard, (12 watt dissipation, a good heatsink is a absolute must). Ideally you'd want a more reasonably matched voltage for higher power stuff like your chip amp.

What is the power supply like? SMPS? Transformer? Wall wart? Maybe it's center tapped, and you can get a 12V and 24V output.

I do have one of these transformers floating around:

I suppose I could build something from scratch. The 24vdc supply I have now is an old Powerbook G4 supply.
