Early on we walked about prizes but the feeling was that it should just be a fun thing with no pressure. Also if there was a prize there would be more skilled people getting involved and the less experienced people would not bother thinking they couldn't win.

Andrew

Agreed, that's why I think a prize for all entries would encourage people to enter, rather than to win. There would have  to be some threshold for determining "serious" entries though, because stuff like my "Speed of Propagation Flanger" should of course not be eligible.

how about different categories à la the recent 555 contest: http://www.555contest.com/rules-and-categories/?

*edit* i missed the previous contests - are there judges or forum/community votes to decide on winners?

Taylor

After the entries are in, a poll is made to get votes on what was the best entry. It's open to all. As far as I remember, there was no standard definition of "best", so the voter could determine his own criteria for a good entry - coolness, originality, sound (if sound clips were made), funny name, etc.

cool. re: categories - i was thinking more along the lines of awarding appropriate prizes if there are to be any - it may seem less intimidating for us noobs to enter going head to head with some of the awesome talents evident through out this forum. also, there maybe prizes far more useful to a beginner than they would be to a seasoned pro diy-er. just a thought. t-shirts are always handy come laundry day.

*edit* i'm not knocking t-shirts - i'd like one! - just worried that off hand comment could be taken the wrong way, hence this edit.

I do miss the contests. What if folks donate a bit of $ to the DIY store. The winner gets to use the money for parts. What could be a better prize then that? Help out the community, help out Aron and see some nice designs. It wouldn't even have to be much, 20 members donate $2 each and the winner walks away with $40 worth of parts??

Maybe only the folks that donate can vote?

I think the deadline extensions hurt the FX-X competitions.  I would be in favor of reinstating the 1-month (strict!) contest, or perhaps even shorter.

I also think it would be VERY cool to have the deadline be the day the Pictures! thread reaches a certain page number, as in the 666 competition.  An imminent but unknowable deadline could really be a kick in the pants for some people, such as myself.

A while back we had a thread of theme ideas for contests.  That could make Andrew's job easier, since he wouldn't have to think up the theme every time.

Three points:

1) I agree with making different "levels" of competition. Possibly based on number of posts  ???  You really do not want noobs competing with seasoned forumites. In the end, it will totally discourage the newer builders.

2) Here is an idea.... each and every input to the contest (or possibly ALL future contests) should be required to include at least 1 part from Aron's store and/or a donation of some sort.  ;)  It is only fair to enact this as it is Aron's forum that hosts the contest + it helps raise money to keep DIYStomp ad free.

3) I also agree with the prize being in the form of parts that are from Aron's store. It will serve two purposes. First, it will provide revenue for DIYStomp. Second, it will possibly boost the store's revenue enough to include MORE items... therefore making it a more viable source of parts for the next contest.

I agree with  Govmnt_Lacky.  The contest should benefit the winner and the site.

A $1 contest entrance fee/donation.  Winner gets the collected value in the form of site store credit.
