Project: Dynacomp
Layout:

.

Only one change compared to the circuit: R10 is 470K instead of 220K.

Voltage readings :

Q1: E=8,37V    B=1,83V   C=1,34V
Q2: E=6,37V    B=2,58V   C=1,67V
Q3: E=8,23V     B=0V        C=0V
Q4: E=8,23V     B=0V        C=0V
Q5: E=8,3V       B=8,3V     C=8,3V

Pin 6 of the LM3080 is 2,6V

V+ is 8,37V

Problem: Low ouput, splatty and distorted

I have followed the signal with an audio probe and at the outout of the IC it already sounds distorted.

All that must be grounded is grounded,

I'm going blind already............are Q3/Q4 voltage readings normal? I have built this on perf and after checking several times I start wanting to cut my veins..............

Any idea?

Pins 1, 4, 5, 7, 8 of the 3080?

If you did not make a mistake about which transistor pin is emitter and which is collector, you have  connection problem. You list all the emitters at the power supply, instead of nearer ground.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Sorry RG, yes it's a typo. The trannies are soldered as in the layout (same orientation)

Voltages at the IC are:

P1: 0V
P2: 4,2V
P3: 4,2V
P4: 0V
P5: 0,58V
P6: 2,6V
P7: 8,40V
P8: 0V

Thanks in advance for the valuable help !!

I built mine onto perf too. Didn't work right off. I found one tiny missing trace in my otherwise splendid perf work, fixed it, perfect. I don't own it anymore so I'm sorry I can't help with voltages.

Ok just found out that I need to remove a trace I made in my perf which joints C1 to C4's anode (although in theory this shouldn't affect my signal, no?)

Damn perf  :icon_evil:

frequencycentral

I think that'd be vref, that connection you made. So yes.

Q5 also look weird to me. Where is the B-E diode drop? Look like all at the battery voltage.

D3 in the layout above, I believe it has wrong orientation (not sure if that's the problem though)

EDIT: No, it wasn't..........

Voltages are still the same. Any other hint?  :'(

OK it works, woohoooo !!! :icon_razz:

Cold solder joint (1st time ever !!)........... now I just got to find a way to make it a bit brighter. I like compressors to "cut" ...........

Thanks for the replies and the help !

Ah, good ol' human error.  ;)  But isn't it a good feeling when a build that makes you 'start wanting to cut my veins' comes good? Better feeling than the ones that work straight off. Glad you got it working.
