How similar would AC125s sound to AC128s in a fuzz face? I'm trying to decide between buying 150 AC125s in sealed original packaging, 100 loose AC128s, or 100 loose 2N404s. The reason I'm having trouble deciding is because the 2N404s and AC128s could have been presorted in a bad way. Any advice?

All of these numbers can be either can be relatively low-gain or too leaky. Do your best to get an agreement from the seller that you can return the lot unsoldered and with full leads if you aren't happy. A reputable seller will sometimes agree to send you samples of loose parts if you pay the postage.

Leaky parts can be much more useful than they once were:

If you are thinking of those Tungram ones...
I wouldn't recommend them at all.

Go get 'em from Steve if you want to be sure, or perhaps some Ruski ones if you want lots.

I haven't tried them.
I bought a box of GT309B. Heaps of them for next to nothing from some former Soviet country, can't remember which one. It was just some random seller, not the two or three you regularly see selling these.
They are nearly all OK of for leakage and consistently come in the Hfe ranges for Fuzz Faces. Seem to all be between 70 - 140.
There is a heap of info here on the forum relating to these. The only thing to watch out for is the letter variant which was used as a grading. GT308B sound excellent too, really really great but the box I bought all seem to be around Hfe 70.

Awesome. Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for some...

It is very confusing with Russian lettering.   If you bought GT308B, that is Russian 1T308Б. GT308V is  Russian 1T308B, which has a little higher gain than GT308B (1T308Б)...
