First of all, I'd wish for anyone that has experimented with this chip to... chip in.
Hemmo started it, Dano took it one step further. Or was it the other way around? In any case, I think it's one of them unsung jewels of the DIY community.
I myself have been looking for a PWM or ringmod-ish effect to add to my pedalchain.
I ended up using an usual NE567 because for the life of me I couldn't source a LMC version over here (what Mrs. Parker and Stone dubber "the asshole of the world".
Aaaanyway... After I fiddled around with the Uglyface I finally decided that a Thing Modulator-ish effect would rather float my boat. Armed with a 1 MOhm frequency pot and 472 cap I could sway the oscillation from near-subsonic to ultrasonic (BTW, a log pot is a lot more useful).
Keeping in mind the fact that I used a run-of-the-mill TTL NE567, here are my findings:

  • Power supply bypass (datsheet says .01uF or above, I used more than 10u): some (@10dB?) suppression of the internal PLL but oddly enough independent of PLL frequency
  • Power supply squelch: I have found that adding a cca. 3 KOhm (this calls for a 10 KOhm trimmer) resistance (BTW, have you noticed this is a French word?) in series with the V+ supply (starving the chip of current) will shut down the internal oscilator before it shuts down the amplifiers.
What pours out of pin 2 (or 1) is some sort of ringmod overdrive.
[/list]
The Un-squelched mode also allows me to tune the 567's oscillator according to my tuner. The usefulness should be obvious.

I'm rather tied up this weekend but if people are interested I'll try to make a video demo.
P.S: I'm still open to suggestions, though the keywords are still "PWM", "ringmod" and probably "atonal".
