I know this is a very basic skill, but I've never done it before.  Can someone please either walk me through the process or point me to a resource where I can see how it's done?

set the dmm on voltage scale > 9 since you are using 9v supply on your tb mk ii. my dmm is set on 20 (ie, it will measure up to 20v). black lead to ground. red lead to the point you are measuring.

This info is in the debugging thread:

some dmm's have a transistor socket....like mine...just poke em in (right way round...) set dmm  to pnp/npn...

its worth getting 1.. :)
