How to get usable low gain and high gain ranges from an overdrive circuit

Hi ,  first post in along time....

How can i get a good range of gain both at low gain end and high gain from an overdrive or booster circuit?
Imagine a inverse bell curve for the a amount of change in resistance (y-axis) vs pot rotation (x-axis)

Is there any way to set this up so that it can be automated in analog circuits simply?
