Morley Bad Horsie mods?

Does anyone know how to mod this pedal in any way? I'd like it to sound thicker and warmer on clean tones.

look for crybaby and vox wah mods.  This is the same circuit.  I think one thing you could do is replace the 2N3904 transistors with 2N5088 or 2N5089, which are equivalent to the crybaby MPSA10 (or is it MPSA18?).  One was a darlington, the other was the 5089 equivalent. Anyway, that's one clue.

You can also replace the trannies with MOSFETs, thogh this takes some biasing prowess as you generally can't just plug and play this way.  It is worth a shot if you're just dinking around and want to try something.

I just recently started a post about my relay driver.  I have had this around about a year, but I just improved and updated the circuit so that you could introduce true bypass to your BH with a relay and a capacitor.  It already has the CD4049 CMOS inverter that my schematic requires:

It wouldn't make the filter any more rich, but what the heck.

Anyway, the conclusion is this:  Any mods you find for the crybaby or Vox wahs can be used to mod the Bad Horsie.

I found some old postings on this site. Ansil - whoever you are-YOU ROCK!!!
I replaced the input cap (C5) with a .1uf instead of the stock .01uf.
I also replaced R12 (68k) with a 56k resistor. More bass response and elimination of the harshness that this pedal exibits in the higher frequencies.

This mod kicks. Thanks to Ansil.

Yeah, what happened to Ansil anyway?  He had a lot of good mods and tips.

Your relay driver looks like a cool idea. Exactly how would I implement it in the Bad Horsie?

All you need to do is connect the capacitor to ground with the relay coil as shown in the schematic.  The CMOS inverter is already used in the BH bypass circuit to drive it on and off, so just take one of the CMOS inverter outputs (the ones that drive the JFETs for bypass) and simply connect it to the relay coil.  That part will drive the relay.

OK, now you just need to remove the input coupling capacitor and the output coupling capacitor and just "move them up" on to a veroboard (or whatever circuit board you build the relay onto).  Use the pads of the missing parts as your access points to the input and output of the BH circuit.  Let me know if you need a picture.  There was another thread where a picture was desired for implementing the relay driver into a BOSS SD-1 or something.  It's a similar concept, so I might draw up two.

Right now I'm on the virge of finally completing my envelope filter pedal prototype that I have been working on building and designing since october.  I got everything in it's box and looking pretty, but am having a problem with the output of my D latches being not large enough to turn the CMOS gates on and off in my bypass scheme for this one.  Needless to say, it has become a very ambitious project but a great deal of fun and learning.  Anyway, I want to get that completed and play with it a little, then I can get back onto drawing this stuff up.

I did a TB mod to my Bad Horsie with a relay. This allowed me to keep the switchless operation.I didn't dig the buffer sound in the normal off position.

A bit of track cutting, and a little bit of logic probing(uses a hex inverter for logic switching and transistor feeds).I modded the circuit to be on all of the time(realy thumps on switching if you don't),and used the transister that normally fires the LED/LDR that turns the pedal on(left that LED on all of the time)to operate the relay for the TB bit.Made it easier that I had the schematic,I can't recall off hand what else I did........I'd have to look at it again.

Open up that off timer trimpot a bit so that the pedal doesn't switch on/off when you are in the heal position immediately.

I could still do a little with some pull down resistors, but I can't hear the little relay "tick" when I'm playing.

Cheers

Chris........
I have no idea what I'm doing, but I like the way it sounds!

did you end up using a latching relay or regular?  I have heard of people having problems with noise from some non-latching relays.

Anyway, it's encouraging to hear that it works well.  I have a Bad Horsie coming off eBay soon that I want to mod.  I had one for a while that I had modded with an envelope filter and "Blue Zebu" option, but I loaned it to a guy to play with and I haven't seen it since.  I swear, gutar pedals are like books--if you ever loan it to a buddy you don't see around often, you won't see it again!  I had kinda wanted to eBay that one, too. At least I could have gotten something from it.

anyone has got the schematic for this true bypass mod?

The website linked is down  :(

Thank you in advance!
