linear pot to log(audio)pot coversion?

i had read from an article that you could change a linear pot to somewhat a log pot-like characteristics by just connecting a certain value of resistor to the middle lug and the ground. how true is this?

any disadvantage of doing this?

I read that article. It was all Greek to me.
