I'm looking to start a parts library and would like to start with resistors. Rather than buying a bunch of different values individually I'd like to buy something that just has a couple hundred of all the common values. I know smallbear has them but I'm just wondering if there are any other options that are better/cheaper out there. I'd prefer to get metal film as I do synth stuff as well which requires tighter tolerances. I'm in Canada if that helps, too.

Thanks!

eBay, "E12 resistor".  That will get you started.  Once you use up all of one value, metal films go for about 4 bucks for 200 to 250 (depending on retailer).

I take it caps are a bit more of a pain (being in different types and all).

Sorta kinda.  Depends on what your priories are.  Mine were price, quantity, and breadth of values on hand; so I basically found the least expensive stuff I could from a reputable source that had a good selection of values.  For pedal building, I just swiped every value from Tayda I thought I would need for film, ceramic, and Al electro (pretty much the whole E6 series).  For Al electros, I grabbed a couple different voltage ratings so I had some flexibility from a size standpoint.  For the larger film caps, I recommend box caps, either from them or elsewhere.  Footprints on many fabricated boards become an issue at 0.1u and above for film, green chicklette style caps are typically bigger than equivalent box caps for this application.
