I've tried to research this but 'IC' is a really hard search term, you get everything! I think I have it figured out but I want to confirm so I don't fry my chip. So, with an ic that has no divot, if you hold it the long way so you are reading the print right side up, is the lower far left pin #1? So would that left side be the 'divot' side?

I'm assuming that by "divot" you mean a small U shaped cut at one end of the IC (blue arrow is pin 1).

If the IC doesn't sport this, then there should be a small round dot, which is molded into the plastic next to pin #1.

Hope this helps.

If there is no dot or notch, one edge should be beveled. With the beveled edge on the left or top, pin one will be top left.

Ps.. Use the term "integrated circuit" when you search.  :)

What if my PT2399 has the dot as well as a small u / half circle at two different sides?

This datasheet shows the u / half circle notch as the indicator. Notch top, pin 1 left. May want to double check if manufacturer is different.

That's what I've been thinking - thanks for your answer! Manufacturer is the same (PTC) but it has both, the dot and the u.

Thanks again!
