Dual channel shared effects loop

I am just starting out with building my own stompboxes, and have a question regarding an odd switching issue.  I have 2 instruments that I want to share an effects loop. I don't need to A/B between the channels, I just need to be able to switch in the effect loop in one or both of the channels.  I saw the schematic here: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=48263.0 , but I was wondering if there is a way to do this with 2 footswitches instead of a single rotary switch.  Can I just use one 3PDT for each 'channel,' and have the effect loop hooked to both the switches?  Let me know if this doesn't make any sense...
