modding woes

ok, so i have modded plenty of boss pedals, but every once in a while they give me a headache.  tonight, its a mt-2 metal zone.  i am doing some pretty basic mods, upgrading capacitors and changing the clipping section.  when i put it back together, it has almost no output when engaged.  it works fine when in bypass, but my new led doesnt get super bright, and i have to crank my amp to 80% to hear ANYTHING when engaged.  i cant even tell how it sounds because it is so faint.

should i be looking in the switching section, power section, or somewhere else in the circuit?  it just weirds me out that it works fine in bypass.  i have tried with both a boss power supply and a new 9v battery with the same outcome.

it's basically the same as with any other troubleshooting...check the voltages and/or use audio probe to pinpoint failure. but when you're modding, it's obvious, but scrutinise the the area you modded first.

isn't that exactly what you'd expect if a circuit mod didn't work and no switching was altered?
always think outside the box

good point.  i just spent the last hour re-wiring the thing, as every time i try to move something a solder point breaks, and now its time for bed.  i double checked my polarities of e-caps last night, and they were all bad.  i switched them all, but could this have fried anything?
