Im not sure if this should go in this section but oh well  :icon_biggrin:....My friend is wanting me to make him a tube preamp, something similar to the ART Tube MP Project Series preamp. Does anyone have any ideas of any schematics or any builds to make one?
Guitars: Ibanez S570DXQM
Amps:  Peavey ValveKing 112, Roland 15XL
Pedals: Big Muff w/ Tone & Wicker, Original Crybaby w/Modifications, BYOC Overdrive 2, Danelectro Cool Cat Chorus, Boss PH-3, Wave Breaker Tremolo,

I have a ART Tube pre and for the life of me can not tell if the tube does anything, I have changed tubes to make no noticeable difference, I am almost positive I could remove the tube and it would still work. This preamp as a lot of silicon and a simple voltage booster. baring the phantom power, I am sure that if you were to take a simple voltage booster, my art reads 70v at the tube plates, and boost a 12ax7 to 70+ volts, place a buffer before and after you would have the basic design.

I could throw something together. The XLR and 1/4 parts need a matching transformer to keep impedance correct, I think the last time I look for one it was cheaper to buy a Direct box and pull it apart.
by the time your are done building one it will have cost you 3x it would to just buy the ART.
case would be $20
Tube $15
Pots $10
Power Supply (you need clean) $15 - $35
Board $10
Electronic parts $30 - $45
Transformers for impedance matching $50
Booster CKT for phantom power $25
USB interface ????
Time.. Testing, Changing, restarting the project due to noticing its more challenging than you thought priceless :)

jc morrison designed the Electro Harmonix 12AY7 tube preamp, and he has some info on his blog at http://www.labjc.com/ about how to improve it.

the tube-mp is a good mic-pre with a tube, but I wouldnt call it a tube preamp. if you want to get started on building a tube preamp, get yourself over to "groupdiy" and search for "NYD onebottle". that'll get you a great sounding, easy to build all tube mic-pre. low partscount but some parts can be a little costly
