Building SHO with Master Volume?

So, I'm looking to build the voltage protected (one diode) version of the sho, so like a super duper, just not 2 in 1.   
On the older circuit, you just replace the 100k resistor with a pot to choke the volume down, but this doesn't have one. The resistor is the one between output and ground.
On the old one, it's a 100k like I said, but the newer design is a 47k. If I put a 47k pot in, will it work as a master volume? Anybody tried it? Or do I just go for it?
