Where can I learn more about WHY pedals work the way they do?

I've made a number of pedals so far and it bothers me slightly that I have no clue why they do what they do. Where can I learn a little more about the electronic aspect of these projects? I do have a little bit of background in simple electronics (And even a little bit of microcontroller programming too), but I guess I don't know much of anything about audio circuits.
