AMZ SSM2165 Compressor Builds?

Bump, hi there !

I recently purchased a bunch of SSM2165-1P and tried to breadboard AMZ's "Q&D compressor v1" as a starting point.

I'm having a serious distortion issue with that schematic. Here is my test rig:

Stratocaster (passive lace sensor pickups) -> 0.1u coupling cap -> ssm2165 (with Jack's values for passive components) -> amp on clean channel.

It sounds like two tracks: one clean, compressed guitar, and one overdriven guitar in background (12ish db below clean, by ear).

I don't understand where this distortion comes from. Could it be an input impedance issue ?
