I missed this thread until today. I would suggest Aron's "Shaka Tube" for a good low-voltage tube pedal. It will give you more drive than the Real McTube because it has an op-amp in the first stage to really goose the tubes. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find the schematic. Maybe someone else has a link? If not that, check out the BK Butler Tube Driver, which is pretty similar. If you do a search, there should be a link to that. It has an op-amp input stage too, so it will give you the drive you are looking for.
