I recently built a green russian big muff pedal according to this vero layout from tagboardfx -

The problem i have is that the big muff sounds quite, well muffled. It sounds as if it as a low pass filter on it. Also there is quite a lot of background hiss present.

Anyone out there got any ideas? Or had a similar problem?

First thing you will need to do is post up the transistor voltages
read this post http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=29816.0 and then post up your voltages

here're the collector voltages from my killer sounding original green Russian:

^^^^  ahh yes, the one with the lovely capacitors  :D  Love it.

Does the tone knob function as expected (if at all you can tell)? Check your resistors/caps in that section. Maybe you mixed up some component values and have two low pass filters. And post a proper debug report as stated.

Check all your soldering and the cuts in the vero. Check to see if you drilled all of the copper away where you were supposed to, and that no tiny specks of solder are bridging two tracks.

when I build on vero I check all cuts with a magnifying glass under a bright light.  It's amazing how a little hair sized sliver or copper can escape the naked eye.

I also run an exacto blade down each row in between the tracks to catch any solder bridges.  Check all those spots with a magnifying glass too.

In other words, go get a magnifying glass  ;D
