I picked up a CS-3 in a trade the other day and I was wondering what mods there are that are good. I know there is the Monte Allums mods  but I dont wanna spend $27 for $8 worth of parts, that I already have. Does anyone know of any other good mods, or tricks to do to make it better? Or is it not worth it?

i haven't done it, but i have heard from people i trust that these sound much better when modded using common internet tactics.

on a similar note, a customer brought in a purple boss flanger ( a flanger i don't like very much) and a $40 mod kit he bought off the internet. after we installed the kit, it sounded like a mini ADA. no shit!

I modded mine a few years back, gave it sum more bass and a better chip(?).
Can't remember the specs but it sounded better, still not great. Now i'm using a DIY Ross compressor if I need one..

Having recently done the opto+ mod to my CS-3, I would say it all depends on what you're looking to get out of the pedal.  If you want a much better version of a CS-3, then yes there are mods out there that are very effective.  In my case, it achieved much less noise, and far better attack, decay, transparency, and range of usefulness.  But sonically it wasn't a lot different as far as flavor of tone goes - maybe a bit warmer and smoother.

If you're looking for a different type of compressor sound (not a lot of experience with other compressors on my end so I don't have the vocabulary to elaborate there), then I would invest your money in a different compressor - it's always going to sound like a CS-3.

In my experience the answer was no.  I think it all depends on what you are trying to achieve by modding the pedal (as mentioned above). I wanted a quieter pedal that was more a strict "sustainer", the CS-3 does not accel at this, and neither had any modded version I played. Sure you can make it quieter, but not as quiet as I want. With that being said, I got a CS-2 and fell in love with it (which is more of a Dynacomp/Ross design from what I understand). I also love the Orange Squeezer, but for different non-standard compressor reasons. I should mention I also got a Barber Tone Press, and while that's nice and very low noise, it doesn't sustain as much as I like and lacks the "musicality" of the CS-2/DynaComp/Ross.
