I would like a more rigorous understanding of what is going on in the circuits I build, rather than the piecemeal knowledge I have at the moment.

Is there a book on audio or general electronics that this forum would recommend? I'm a mathematics graduate, so mathematically inclined books preferred.

You don't think it's too general? Has anyone used Principles of Transistor Circuits by Stan Amos?

Stompbox Cookbook, and Klein's Electronic Music Circuits. Both available online for free.

Art of Electronics is great, but at least half of it you will never use for pedals, and it's an expensive book, so that's an expensive half you're not using. The other half is covered equally well by other books. Maybe not just one convenient other book, but other cheaper books.

Brilliant. Thanks.

Douglas Self's audio books are excellent and +1 for Art of Electronics. I was lucky enough to get the latter on long-term loan from a mate.

If you're of a mathematic bent you might like to fiddle with models using Matlab or Octave. There's loads of stuff published about it and even a couple of decent free books (search for circuit analysis and matlab)

+1 for Doug Self: particularly "Small Signal Audio Design".

Ohm's Law - much like Coles Law, but with less cabbage...

I don't think one book will cover everything. I like "The Circuit Designer's Companion" by Tim Williams. It has a lot of practical information that relates to actually building stuff. (trace width, shielding, component selection - things that aren't covered in theoretical books)

Not cheap though.

Yes Small Audio Design is excellent as are his other books.  "Audio Engineering - Know It All" and "Circuit Design - Know It All" are also well recommended.
