so.. i've breadboarded something cool.. but turns its extremely loud.. i could put in a volumeknob but that would be useless as it would be fixed around 20% all the time. is there a good/easy way
to decrease the overall volume without changing too much character? maybe put a fixed resistor in front of a volume knob? (thats the first thing that comes to mind)

can anyone put me in the right direction?

A volume control is a resistor divider. If you don't want it to be variable then use fixed resistors instead of a pot.

Or if you want it to be variable but over a smaller range, the yes, put a resistor in series with the end of the pot.
