Have any of you ever intermingled SMD resistors/etc on a protoboard with/for thru hole components?

is there a particalur standard size of SMD units that plays well with the .1 spacing?

The standard SMT resistor sizes are the length and width in dimensions in thousandths of an inch.  So a 1206 resistor is 0.120 long by 0.060 inches wide.  Similarly, 0805 us 0.080 x 0.050 and 0603 is 0.060 x 0.030.  So if you have a pair of dial calipers you can measure the distance between the pads and see what size resistor will comfortably bridge that gap without crossing the center line.  I imagine 0805 or 0603 will fit the best.
