Thanks for giving this  a look see.  I built it as shown (with C4 correctly from b-15 to d-15) and it gets nothing but "wsssssssshhhhhh" like a bad capacitor.  Which is probably the case since I stole all the .047 uf caps from an old, old stereo!

Give this the hairy eyeball if you can, friends!  I added a protection diode (D3) and a filter cap (the electrolytic) to the original circuit.
There's a track cut under D1.
