Just wanted to say, I had a batch of GT402's and GT108v's and they were both great. More than 90% were great Fuzz gains and minimal leakage.

Sorry to bump an old thread.

But being a germanium novice I was just wondering what were the things you should look for apart from hfe if buying bulk and not being able to test them first.

Check around the forums, and ask the folks that are happy with the ones they`ve used, where they got them from.

That`s what I did, and my batches have been pretty good. For the price, the dud rate has been quite acceptable. Especially considering the garbage that`s out there.

The MP16 and MP20 series is pretty good as well, as is the GT402, and GT404. I really like these ones.

Like I said, do your homework.

The GT402B may be better for Q3 in a Tone Bender type circuit.  Out of a batch of 50 that I bought, gain ranged from 78 to 193hfe, 39 of them were over 100, and all of them had leakage but only 2 had what I would consider to be excessive.
