de-"bunching" the fuzz on a 1K fuzz pot

All is well when I have the 1K fuzz pot turned all the way up -- tons of saturation.  But once I turn it down a bit, it clears up too quickly.  I'd like a slower, less dramatic taper downward so that there's more available fuzz at the 50% mark.  Would adding an additional resistor to lug 1 of the pot help with this?  Maybe a 390R or a 470R resistor?

A reverse audio taper pot

will give you what you want. I think some of my competitors now also stock these.

Hi,

you can also try to change the taper of your pot by adding a resistor in parallel to the wiper and upper lug. This might quickly achieve what you are aiming for. You may need to use a 2k maybe.

This is where R.G. would come in and say: "read http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/potsecrets/potscret.htm"

;-)

A taper resistor alone from wiper to "upper" lug will effect the biasing as you turn the control.  The gain control is part of the biasing of the FF like circuit.

You can also use an audio taper control but the gain control will work backwards

Kesh

I'd forget taper and swap it for a 500R pot and a 500R resistor.

For FF some people put a 1k fixed resistor in, and alter fuzz by an input "drive" pot.

Correct, i just realized that ... it will change the bias as you turn the pot ...   :-[

I like kesh's suggestions, makes for a very usable Fuzz

deadastronaut

suggestion: remove the pot totally...

22uf/1k-2.2k to ground.... :icon_twisted:

i too didn't find the control useful at all.......so i got rid of it.....but i added a 10k bias pot instead..

talking of which..

OT but a nifty bias mod.... i do love an led... ;)

a lot of players just leave the fuzz maxed and slowly dial it down with guitar volume control....that's if it's set up properly
always think outside the box

just to add another option, i replaced the 1k pot with a 1k resistor and then replaced the 100k feedback resistor with a 100k log pot. works like a charm.

the 4.5v on the collector of q2 drifts a little (0.5v over the full range) but not enough for it to notice

That is exactly what i breadboarded yesterday too ;-) found it much more useful than the classic fuzz pot.
