Hi all,

I'm currently repairing a Catalinbread Formula No 5 pedal. I'm fairly sure some transistors have gone (along with the protection diode) so am replacing them but in the meantime I noticed that a lot of the components have a lead that goes nowhere (i.e. they are only connected via one end). I checked the schematic and it says on these components that the other lead goes to ground. The thing is, I can't see how it can go to ground - there are no wires connecting it to the case, and although the bottom of the case is bare metal and would act as a ground, surely all the solder joints would go to ground then? The leads on those components that are supposed to ground are just the same length as those that aren't. What gives? Sorry if this is a nooby question, and in any case it doesn't really matter as the circuit obviously works the way it is, just wondered is all.

Thanks for your time!

You will find this is a double sided pcb and there is a ground plane on one or both sides, all the grounded component leads that look like they go nowhere are connected on this ground plane. Pretty standard stuff in PCB design.

Ok thanks, I knew it would be something simple but am fairly new to all this stuff! Thanks very much :)
