Idea for an ultra simple and cheap power supply

This idea came to me driving home from work today. What if you used this voltage regulator

Then powered it with an old laptop power supply. As long as the laptop power supply has enough amps to supply the pedals and you slap a heat sink on the IC it should work, right? It's cheap and simple. What do you all think?

Datasheet says C1 0.33uF and C2 0.1uF

Any reason you're going for a lot higher than that?

No I just pulled the layout from google images and that's what it had listed. So no, no reason. Would there be an adverse effect of using that high of values?

It's just a very basic low-pass filter I guess. For example, your version's C1 starts cutting out frequencies above 7kHz whereas the datasheet suggests 480kHz. You're right, there's no difference, and actually your version is better for cutting out unwanted frequencies. (just did the maths behind that which was a nice bit of revision :P )

As for the schematic, it sounds good, and is nice and simple. Should do the job well - the datasheet says it can handle 35V! After you've got your heat sink on, make sure you do the highly technical P.R.R test:

Step 1. Wet your finger

Step 2. Place finger on metal heat sink

Step 3. Check for fizzing noise/burning sensation

If Step 3 = true, use bigger heat sink
If Step 3 = false, sit smugly and enjoy 9V output

Cool! I figured if you had the power supply lying around collecting dust why not use it for something. I hear reduce, reuse, recycle is the way to go these days.

i think the ps ia 18 at 2.5 a . i used a tin , like a cookie / candy tin so the chassis acts like a heat sink . i did fuse it . i prolly shoulda went with a lower value quick blow fuse . i reverse polaritied my compressor and toated a cca3080e . got an lm3080 in there now , but i just found a bunch of both in some pcbs i pulled out of an organ  :icon_redface: hmmm .
im learning , we'll thats what i keep telling myself

Most non-budget DMMs come with a thermocouple.
