How important is the faraday shield in a pedal?

I've been looking for ways to make my pedal more interesting, and I found these enclosures:

http://www.rapidonline.com/Mechanical-Fastenings-Fixings/CamdenBoss-Vario-Case-Black-214-x-170-x-82mm-6000-Series-30-5651

It's a base and sides made of (tough enough) ABS and a sheet of aluminium on top. Would I be getting horrible buzz etc?

(It's a shame I cant quite afford these bad boys http://www.rapidonline.com/Mechanical-Fastenings-Fixings/Hammond-1444-series-aluminium-chassis-with-walnut-side-panels-500156 )

Thanks a lot!

George

I don't know the answer but this pedal seems to work out allright and it doen't seem to have much 'shielding'...

garcho

For the most part, high gain effects, like fuzz/dist, need shielding, a delay or chorus, maybe not. Are you building for yourself? I played out of a AMZ mosfet booster in a tuperware for years and had no problems. I wouldn't give someone else anything in plastic though. You can't predict every situation, engineers prefer safe over sorry.

Okay I now feel inadequate in thinking that a slight slanted box was "making my pedal more interesting".  :icon_redface: The bar just got kicked through the roof. A car??? How do I fit my multi effects into a car though... I'm going to need a lorry for the four stomp switches.  :icon_lol: Maybe a different line of attack is needed, but thanks a lot for the inspiration dude!

Thanks for the feedback garcho. It's for myself, but inside is going to be a comp, a lightish drive (trotsky drive), a chorus and a delay. Should be wavering on the okay side, especially if I use shielded cable in front of the drive?

Kesh

you could always buy sticky copper foil and line the inside with that

garcho

Tape works as long as you solder ground to the tape, not as easy as it sounds but possible.
I would buy an aluminum enclosure if you can afford it. You're putting a lot of work into that thing for it to end up buzzing on you!

Very good point. Cost wasn't actually the issue, I was mainly hoping to get something more unique, but I guess my design is going to have to cover that area ;)

@george,  i bought one of those slanted font boxes in your first post...ok for desktop use, but not really stompable..

stick with the solid stuff. :)

Good to know! Thanks Rob. You're a constant source of Brit knowledge ;)
