LPB transistor question

I'm building a LPB to boost the output of a Kay tremolo. Works great but the 2N5088 (500 hFe range) I'm using gives me to much boost.
Tried a 2N3904 (300 hFe range) and it gives me just the right boost but adds a lot dirt (not a clean boost like a 2N5088/89)

What should I use to get the boost of a 2N3904 but the cleanness of a 2N5089?

Any suggestions?

Why not just add a trimpot to the output of the 2N5088 circuit and adjust volume to taste?

'could do that but I'm curious about the transistor.

That seems odd to me the LPB is a circuit that should react close to the same with different transistor because of the design.  What are the base collector and emitter voltages referenced to ground of the two different transistor builds what is the measured  power supply voltage of both LBP builds.

i can definitely see the 5089 having more "headroom" and distorting less... but i would assume it would have more volume too.
weird!
as for volume, i gotta agree with ron...
a plain-jane volume control is pretty easy.

different transistors have different sounds. a lot of it comes from the gain, but some are quieter, some noiseier etc.
be curious too to see your voltages!!
two of the best guys you could hope for are on this thread, so listen to them..
ron and gus are ace!!
