Noob Question: Where is Lug 1, 2 and 3?

Well, I prefer the use of in - out - ground terms to cut down on the number dyslexia.

What if one of the lugs isn't going to ground, as is often the case?

There actually is a pot lug numbering standard. Looking at the back of the pot with the lugs facing down, lug 3, lug 2, lug 1.
