What to do you this truckload of Mojo Resistors?

Hello Stompboxererers!

I won this MASSIVE lot of old resistors in an ebay auction tonight.  I feel like it was a score but until I receive it (and also learn a bit about these old components) I wont know.  It looks like theres an absolute mountain of them in the photos!

anyway, was wondering what you guys thought of them from the pictures?  A lot of them look like they are quite sizable / high wattage rated, probably not a huge amount in there that will be usable for guitar pedals.  What other uses can you think of for stuff like this?  Its hard to tell from the pics, but do you what do you think of them, any good? Did I just waste 80 bucks? :D

Sell them one at a time to people who are desperate for more mojo.   :icon_biggrin:

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Considering that mouser sells 1/4 watt carbon comp resistors for between 28 and 42 cent apiece, and from the picture it looks like there's quite a few, you probably got a pretty good deal.

But who's going to sort them?  ;D
I just designed a new fuzz circuit! It almost sounds a little different than the last fifty fuzz circuits I designed! ;)

I was thinking that (huge pedal with turretboard).  depends how big these resistors are though, some of them look pretty chunky.  Have to wait and see whats in the lot.  I honestly don't have much clue about mojo, I just thought I would go in with a sensible offer and luckily I won it (just).

Anyway, probably be a bit of fun looking through all this stuff!

Sorting it is going to be a pita lol

Edit: also my dad does the odd amp repair so it would be handy to have these around.  Have to just make sure I use the right wattage.  its going to be a history lesson for me, im not familiar with a lot of these old resistors.  Which is great! I like to learn.

Obviously the first thing to do is make a fuzz with the higher voltage ones and then sell it on TGP. No such thing as "wasting money" where mojo is involved. :D

Of course!  It will sound much better with carbon comp resistors...everyone knows that... :D

Edit: Come to think of Jon, i dont think anyone has sold "higher wattage rated resistors = better tone" to the guitarist community yet!?

Looks like piles of junk to me. JUST like they were cut out of radios because they were dead.

The best place for most of these is on the OUTside of your enclosure. Maybe a reverse-eddy effect will color the sound inside. I sure would not want most of those *in-circuit*.

BTW, there's capacitors in there. And even if I remembered the old codes, the paint-colors fade.

And probably other stuff you won't know WHAT it is, and maybe shouldn't want to.

I think R.G. is right. Most of this should be dribbled to auction in very tiny lots with glowing "mojo" descriptions.

I was going to say the sellers use of the words "as is" about 10 times in the listing is concerning, but he seems to do that in all of his auctions...

I noticed that capacitor in one of hte bags as well.

They could very well end up back on ebay in smaller organised lots.  Im not a 'mojo' fan.  I think some of the mojo builds i've seen people build around here look cool, but thats about it.

Anyway, have to wait and see if they are any good.  Alot of the leads look uncut, still no gurrantee that they will work though of course.

Always thought of 'mojo' as being pretty much about the looks. Well, I guess I don't always know what it means. It's a word for zombies by now anyway. Or Frankensteins - "Mojo good!" "Mojo bad!" lol. Side effect of the marketing usage at some point I guess. Hope your purchase works out for you one way or another :) Love your Youtube channel btw!
I'm too elusive for the catching!

Thank you Merman!  I will probably put a video up of this stuff when it arrives.  Information is presented quicker that way (instead of 1000 photographs of it all), and I can go through what's in the bags.  No idea about any of this stuff though so its not going to be an educational tour! lol

a lot of those tubes with coloured dots and the wrapped leads will turn ot to be caps. probably real small values, if I remember right.

I've got some "mustard" caps here that will nicely complement the mojo from the resistors. and they work good, too.
I feel sick.

That was my thought when I saw the picture. They look physically large too...

Alot of the leads are uncut...look at the other bags.

Anyway we can 'speculate' till the cows come home.  We'll see when they arrive.

Nice score!

Don't think I have ever seen so much mojo in one place before.  I think you could just put the bags next to you pedals and I'm sure some mojo will rub off  ;)

chromesphere

lol I think the guy said he was selling them because he was sick of having an afro :D
