Hi all,

I built a rat clone recently and it was working great but just recently it seems to have stopped outputting clean sound. When I engage the distortion it works fine, however if i try and run it clean i get nothing.

Does anyone have any idea what I should be checking? I'm aware that this problem is usually the other way round so I'm wondering if I need to be checking for loose connections somewhere on the footswitch?

Cheers

If "just recently it seems to have stopped outputting clean sound" then something has broken.  As mentioned already, it's probably a wire or the footswitch itself, and it could also be a bad solder joint.  When bypassed, you should have continuity between the tip lugs of the input and output jacks (and no continuity between there and ground).  This requires continuity between each jack lug and its corresponding footswitch lug, and between the bottom and middle lugs in the right column of the footswitch (according to the diagram) which perform the bypass function.  And those four lugs should not be connected to anything else (except the top row middle lug of the footswitch).

Apologies, I am actually using this for the offboard wiring:

GGBB: Thanks. It most likely is as I suspect but was wondering if there was anything else that could have caused the problem before I went poking around ;-) I'll have a look at that with my DMM tonight.

ok i've had a poke around with my DMM and when bypassed there is continuity between the tip lugs of both jacks, and none between the tips and ground. The wiring on the bottom of the switch all looks sound as far as the solder joints go. Would you suggest reflowing them?

Can't hurt I suppose.

I think there may have been something shorting on the case. I've insulated it a little better, I also tightened up all the nuts on the hardware as there were some wobbly parts...and in doing so I noticed one of the jacks' tip connector was bent in such a way that it wasn't making very good contact with the jack lead connector when i put a gutiar lead in there. I bent it back into shape and it now seems to work a lot better after making these alterations. Hopefully it'll behave now. Thanks for your help folks
