Definitely ISP Decimator G-String !
Worth every penny you spend.
Simply the best noise reduction in the planet.
Why ? Coz i've built it one hehehe......

Have to agree... I just posted the diode gate in response to the request for a "good easy noisegate" the Decimator is obviously the best gate around no doubt but definitely not exactly "easy" to build!  I have to disagree about the diode/jsx gate, if installed properly and adjusted as such works very well and you don't have to adjust anything it just does it's work..

The Amptweaker Tight Metal and Tight Rock pedals use this diode gate and it works flawlessly!!! They incorporate the gate into the gain pot using a dual gang A500k pot so the more you turn up the gain the more gate you get... very cool idea! Very nice option to have in your dirt/distortion pedals and I haven't seen that option in many...!

By the way, he has the gate on for virtually the entire demo... Sounds good to me!

what i've been using is a three fold approach. after my fuzzes/distortions, i put the joyo. you can't use the goddamn thing without some preamp before it, but it works REALLY well with loud dirt in front of it.. i only turn it on usually during "hollywoods" or long sustained solos. works great. for this only.
use the built in gate of an old boss me6 ... so like, fuzzface>toneblaster>sd1>bmp> joyo>crybaby>be5 (comp, od/dist,gate,delay, chorus)>rotovibe>cyber champ, also with a touch of noise gating on.

works fairly well, if ya work with what ya got. the boss is the better of the three, obviously, but all three do different things and the combo can let me get immense distortion (3-4 fuzzes on at once) without the noise swamping EVERYthing.

but... i would like something with a bit more control. the joyo's threshold has about 1/64th of a turn where it works. but it works GREAT there.

that's nice, dear....

:icon_eek:

so does mine. but it doesn't squelch the mating triceratops noises made by three or four cranked up fuzzboxes. ;)

noise gate makes me not have to run back to my pedalboard at the end of every song or solo stomping on stuff.

Nice, man  ;)
I hope somebody post The Amptweaker Tight Metal and Tight Rock pedals DIY schematic here too 8)

hey jimi , did you try any of these out ?

i was curious about the hotamp , although i do not ave any bc547c's ... can i sub those ?

thanks !

jokerx i tried the right half of that diagram with a purple plexi 800 , it definitely did reduce the output , but it didnt seem to gate ... i am sure i munged something up with that .... lol .

Have you tried the Gator? I built one from the layout on the Gausmarkov site - it's a simple build, works fine for me, and as a plus it can do the slow-gear style violining thing.

Having said that it's the only noise gate I've ever tried, so I can't comment on how it compares to others.

Mark Hammer

The SSM2166 chip, or the chip+adaptor board that Steve Daniels sells, is about the easiest and most reliable noise-reduction you'll ever make.  It lets you set the threshold where downward expansion is applied, AND...you get a top notch compressor for free!  :icon_mrgreen:

petey twofinger

i will look into that mark , and thank you for the assist !

harald sabro made a vero up of the mxr noisegate too.

i just got done printing the hotamp one, if it works, i'll let ya know, petey

About 4 years ago, I decided to learn from scratch how to code PICs (it took about 6 months to get literate)....once my learning was complete, I was using a PIC to detect signal strength (peak detect in software using ADC & a simple bit of code I lashed together) & have it control a digipot (to control signal level) - even though I was using it for digital AGC, it could be readily adapted as a noise gate, for example...

If incoming ADC reading (signal) is below x....then turn the digipot down to zero (rate of descent can be set by user to avoid abrupt gating) - complete silence.
If incoming signal is greater or equal to x....then turn the digipot up to max - full signal.

Voila - instant noise gate.

when it comes to low parts count ....especially for envelope detection (& then doing stuff in relation to the signal strength), you really can't beat a little 80 cent PIC (& it's in the sidechain so all the analogue purists can relax!). IMHO opinion, any DIYstompoxer wanting to knock up his own designs, should have some basic MCU programming chops in his toolbox  ....analogue is obviously king round these parts, but all too often a simple PIC is the way to go (control signals, PWM, peak detection, switching LEDs/Mosfets etc, preserving battery life by shutting down the cct when unused etc)

This is a grand idea!

I bought a used "pedal that shall not be named" you could say it "decimates" noise.

The speed of the gate is ridiculous it's nearly instant on instant off. Well worth the 80$

Not in the spirit of diy but there is a layout on the other forum, but it was just worth the quick eBay buy to not deal with it. Very impressive

i finally broke down and just bought a used ns2 on evilbay for 40 bux. it was cheaper than building it this time, i think...at least in term of my time.

I think we can mention the name and discuss that pedal here.
We can discuss the reverse engineering without complaining .... oh what kind of lawsuit we get, oh what if the company knows bla bla bla...
We can discuss it here as a hobby, that's it.
