Does anyone know of a qaulity cab sim for a Fender style that is not too noisy please.
I'm looking for something that will not have a large part count (not much room left on the pcb) to go with my recording preamp.

I don't know about noisy, but Fender style and low parts count get addressed here: http://www.runoffgroove.com/cabsim.html.

Thanks GGBB I hadn't see that one before looks just about right for my needs.

B Tremblay

The frequency response of the Condor is much improved over that circuit.

The footprint of the Condor is considerably larger than the Cab Sim, and it aims to emulate a 4x10" Jensen cab as opposed to a single Fender 12" - two of the three things mentioned by the OP.

Have built them both and prefer the Cab sim over the Condor. Could be a little brighter but overall more realistic in my opinion... I am sure a presence/bright mod could be installed.

By the way - neither are noisy!

What about this one I just found.

Larger than I.d like parts wise but I would consider doing a daughter board at a later stage ( I've run out of perf board. I know schoolboy error for a pedal enthusiast) I do have some small veros though. Is the vero layout verified?
Plus I have another woe. No  100k pots. Do have 500 ohm pots though. Not sure how to convert them though please advise if possible thanks

I have tried them all and this is the best one I have built/heard yet! There are updates for it also if you look in the forum :icon_twisted: Hope you don't mind Russian... :icon_rolleyes:

Thanks Jim that sounds really great.
I built the ROG cabsim and its sounds good too but i'm loosing way too much volume compared to what i had.
Any ideas how i could get more volume with distortion from the sim please. any resistor values i could change for example without it affects the tone too much.

I might have to build this one too when i get some more boards it doesnt look too hard or large parts count for the available options with it.
Although i dont read russian i just have to hope there are no errata in the following notes int the forum.
Thanks for the help buddy.

First make sure the FETs are biased correctly.  If they are, you could increase the gain of one or both of the FETs to get more volume.  There's more than one way to do it, but try replacing the 2K2 resistor with a 1K2 and a 1K trimpot in series - 1K2 at the FET side.  Connect pin 3 of the trimpot to the 1K2, pin 1 to ground, and the wiper to a cap which goes to ground.  The cap should probably be around 3.3uF or greater.  If there's still not enough gain with the trimpot all the way up, swap the positions of the 1K2 and the trimpot.

You could also dry different FETs that have more gain (2N5457, J201), but you may need to adjust the bias - replace the 6K8 with a trimpot as advised in the ROG document.  This may change tone as well.

I have no idea why you would be losing volume? Mine sounds a bit too dark or muffled for my taste but no volume loss...I did use J201's maybe that is the kicker? The Hotline 2 sounds incredible! I hardly use impulses anymore.... just the Hotline 2...

Thanks guys. i tried the j201 and it has a bit more umph but now it has more distortion too so i'll try the other trick later too.
As soon as i get some more boards i'm gonna build that sim Jim.
Heres a snippet of my latest hacked preamp that i cobbled together most of the circuits are ROG except the effects loop which i used the buff and blend.

its a jfet preamp, fx loop tone stack (bax), opamp power stage, cab sim (cab sim not used in theis sample. subject to alteration)

theres no studio software trickery no mastering etc
strat to preamp to line in on interface (fx in the loop second half Boss SD1 overdrive)
I have the preamp biased so it sounds very compressed i will probably change this.
Excuse the rubbish playing

Hoorah i got the stripboards today and my Hotline 2 board is populated. I'm done in so i'll sort the switches, pots and IC tommorow then probably spend the next couple of nights debugging knowing my luck.
I don't know if you read russian Jim. I'm just praying theres nothing wrong with the schematic above. or any errata added in the forum.
