Are you talking about a compressor or an overdrive type sound? There's quite a lot of factors involved in getting that kind of sound. I don't think there's a one-size-fits-all answer to that question. In my experence it's never been as simple as plugging into "X" pedal to get that magic sound.

Crank an amp loud enough and stand in the right place and the feedback will make the note sustain forever, no pedal required - just ask Carlos Santana

Hi Paul,
I'm thinking about sustainer for overdrive or distortion type of sound. Any idea ?
And what is for the compressor - sustainer that you think is best ?

Big Muff Pi with Creamy Dreamer mods?

Hi Matthew,
Have you built it ? Can it sustain notes with sounding a tone character nicely ?

Hi Roger!

Don't know if it's your bucket of pancakes but here you go, Big Muff Pi with Creamy Dreamer (like) mods.

I think you need to post an example of the sound you're hearing. You're describing a sound that is not usually associated with compressors, which are sometimes called "sustainers"; and a "sustainer" is also a special type of pickup.

Also, no pedal can add sustain that a guitar does not have. All they can do is even out the wave form -- that is, create compression. You still need enough volume to create feedback to get more sustain than your guitar gets naturally.

I'm still not clear on what you mean by "sustainer", or "creamy" for that matter.  There are a bunch of very different things blurred together there.

Roger, you might want to make your way through this post and do some reading... Very cool stuff!

Doesn't matter what you did to get it... If it sounds good, then it is good!

Yeah, that is why I am a little confused.

Thanks guys for the response,
Sustainer in my mind is a pedal and im not talking about sustainer pickups, that can sustain notes.
Maybe you have heard Slash's solo or long sustaining note that goes on and on seems like forever after a solo at the end of the show.

I think you're confusing volume with pedals.  You can make just about any guitar have endless sustain if your crank the volume and stand in front of the amp.

petey twofinger

i have read that slash uses feedback to sustain notes for solos . i would think volume and eq would help , mid boost ?
im learning , we'll thats what i keep telling myself

The only way you can authentically get that sound is via amp feedback or a sustainer pickup system. I've never seen a pedal that can do that.

I used to get endless sustain with a Boss Metal Zone and standing in a certain place by my amp - feedback sustain at will once I learned how to manage it and not just have chaos. I can get almost the same sound with my guitar that has a sustainer pickup system in it, but it's not quite the same as amp feedback.

deadastronaut

i guess that the question should be ...

what pedal will give the best 'perceived' sustain....that 'feel' of notes going on longer than usual...without feedback, or sustainers...

this is kinda cool...i'd love to know how it works... 8)

Rob - that looks like a pretty cool pedal. It seems to be able to select your 'desired harmonic effect - fundamental, upper-fifth, or sub-octave harmonic'. I can't think of a feasable way to generate an analogue upper-fifth in a sensible fashion, so it looks like it is probably digital. We might be able to cook up something similar though using some form of (short) delay line with the feedback gain set using the volume pedal.

Edit - just found this thread, which is quite interesting: http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=99516.0;prev_next=prev

Right - so is this the 'creamiest sustainer' of them all? If so, you are probably out of luck as far as a DIY clone goes.
