Orange Squeezer Brightness Control Question

In Mark Hammer's Orange Squeezer variant, he adds a brightness control as depicted in the top section of the image below.  My question is, how is this different than the the slightly simpler one in the bottom section?



I believe there is some difference, and they will therefore work a little differently, but I don't quite know exactly what is happening.  I think when both controls (VR1 and VR2) are fully CW (diagram right), they are identical circuits.  But are they different or the same when the control is moved away from CW?
