How do *you* ground unused pot lugs?

I don't know if I am rehashing something that has been discussed at length or not, so here goes

How do you prefer to ground lugs on your pots?

Do you run a wire to a specific ground point in the pedal chasis?

Do you short the lug to the pot chasis as is done in guitar wiring and have it ground to the enclosure (assuming that the enclosure is grounded to the same ground as your circuit)

You don't necessarily ground unused lugs, and probably shouldn't. Not all pots have a grounded lug, used or not. Some of them are floating.

If the pot is connected as a variable resistor, using one end lug and the wiper, connect the unused lug to the wiper.

If one lug is supposed to be grounded, you'll have to think about whether the pot shell or chassis is a reliable ground.

I personally run a wire back to the circuit board, where the circuit can take that "ground" as being what the pot refers to. Chassis/enclosure grounds can be less than secure. But that's just me; I'm a nut for solid grounding, referred to the right place for the circuit. People get away with lots of things that aren't specifically "right".

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
