10...count 'em...TEN ge transistors...

octave up? down? both? what the hell is it?

i've seen the 6tr and 8tr shin ei boxes, but never this 10t thing... or have i just not been paying attention?

There is a project for it here:

http://topopiccione.atspace.com/PJ15ShinEiOctave.html

Seems to be an octave down effect.
Haven't seen too many pictures of one, let alone actually seen or heard it. Could be hen's tooth material.

Also, they would be silicon as opposed to ge transistors, according to the parts mentioned.

I've been thinking of putting this one together for a while. If you end up making it, a "stupid pedal tricks" for it would be righteous.

i think i'll ask dino to take a crack at veroing it for me...
he's ace with that, and i can't get diylc to work right on win 7... if i make a mistake i get only one level of undo. then it's render and redo...until finally done.

but yah, does look cool...octave down sounds cool, i love the shin ei octave up. together, maybe ya get godzilla!! ;)

this one from toppo's site is different it has 11 transistors not 10~

they are close... but not the same bro

so...typo? or hen's tooth?

Jimi,

I count 11 transistors in YOUR layout too!

Dino's gonna be busy for a bit.  He came by yesterday to get the Guild Tri-Oct from me to reverse.  Given that it's a polyphonic octave divider, I think it may sub nicely for the Shin-Ei circuit.  I think it also uses about 10 transistors per divider, 2 of them germanium (2N388 and 2N404).

Do I see a Guild Tri-Oct sale in the near future?

Good Luck with that!  :icon_eek:

That was mine.  I got in trade from a music store for a Gibson Skylark amp.  I put it on ebay with a BUY IT Now of $1000 but it actually ended up selling for more than that.

You just may, Ron.   :icon_wink:  Fingers crossed.  One of the things DIno and I discussed yesterday was whether something like this could be adapted to a GK-type pickup.  The P-90 sized pickup it originally came with got in the way of sensing the strings at a point where string separation could be easily maintained.  Adapting the design to work with a GK-1/2/3 would mean the pickup could be placed up against the bridge where it needs to be for any divided-hex applications.  Otherwise it becomes like trying to play two notes at once into a Blue Box.  Maybe Dino can get a better sense of what sort of signal level each of the coils is putting out.

That Guild Timbre Generator thing looks absolutely amazing.  It also makes me think that Mike Biegel had something to do with the Tri-Oct.  I tried contacting him about it a few years back, and never got a reply.  I had connected with Elliot "Reeling in the Years" Randall, via his Myspace page, and Elliot suggesting mentioning that he had referred me to MIke.  But that didn't seem to do the trick.  Maybe one day we can find out the backstory on these things, because they're important.

I can`t see the pics here at work, but if they`re the same, I could whip up a vero for ya this week.

I`ll look at them tonight.

This puppy doesn`t call for them, and I prefer to stay as faithful as possible to the spec`d trannys. I`ve got a bucket of 828`s as well. The odd time I do stray, is when I`m facing something unobtainium, or when I experiment, and I find that another transistor performs better.

The Ludwig is a good example of different transistors working better. I managed to track down and buy a bunch of transistors that are identical spec`s to the original unit, and I did try them. Sure enough, the clone REALLY sounded identical to both original units that I had. Even the scope waveforms told me that I was super close, and even spot on in some cases. But, in this case, that wasn`t «a good thing». Other than using 5088`s in the first four slots, what R.G. spec`d in the doc worked much better to my ears. So, what I pulled out of that experience was to try to be faithful to the original first, and then experiment.

gotcha bro.

i got no qualms with using 666 resistors.

where the hell is dave/lucifer's trip, speaking of hell, and germanium??  :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:
