Hey guys, thought I would just post this here.  Its a quick video on making your own J201's with smd mmbfj201's.  Pretty straight forward but I thought if there were stompboxerers out there that hadn't thought of doing it this way, it might help!

Thoughts, criticism's, improvements, etc are very welcome!

I cant take credit for the idea.  I have seen the idea mentioned a few times here and on MBF, and decided to try it out.  Its pretty simple to do!

well, you did bring it here and expose people who might have never seen it. And that counts for something  :icon_wink:

If I ever get too heavy into J201's, I know how to keep it cheap, now.
If I can solve the problem for someone else, I've learned valuable skill and information that pays me back for helping someone else.

J201's cost anywhere from $.50 to $2.00 now.

The ones from tayda don't even seem to be lefit ones anymore, way out of spec. My first set from them was golden all the others are the "fake" ones. I use the term fake loosely


After seeing this I am buying a reel of 100 J201 SMDS from mouser for $15 which is $.15 a piece and I am guarenteed the real deal. Technically $20 with shipping since I can't remember what else I need from mouser. so $.20 a piece but still a deal.

Thanks guys,

The putty stuff is blu-tac.  Its pretty much replaced my helping hands for all small soldering work including wires to pcb.  Its easier and faster.

I think I would prefer the pcb adapter boards then the perfboard method.  It looks a bit messy.

I have added a pdf file to the product page.  Theres like...400 boards on it which is probalby overkill but of course you can just cut it down to size.

I've adjusted a few things (cutting space for one) so its 'unverified' i guess you could say.  Let me know if it needs adjusting and i will change it.  Heres the link once more for people that want it:

Absolutely; a dedicated board would be much easier (though if I were going that far, I'd probably just re-do the layout with SMD transistors).  At that time I was looking to make a point because people where whining about a problem with a very obvious solution (http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=95438.0).  I posted that link here just to provide a some history to the topic and an example of other work which has been done to bridge the SMD/through hole gap. That thread also had transfers which I thought people would find useful.

Is it possible to do this, plus add some passives to the mix, so that it can be used as a self biased module?

Hmmmm... Surfboards...
Wouldn't it be easier to solder on some cut off leads from something else directly on to the FET, then stick some goop over the whole thing? I have no idea what I'm talking about, so you should probably ignore me  :icon_mrgreen:
If at first you don't succeed... use bigger transistors!

I just figured it was going to be difficult to make a connection between the transistor and the lead...but....Why not?  I might try this!  Cheers!
