I just tried wiring up an effect via battery power.  The effect isn't working/powering up, and the battery is getting uncharacteristically warm/hot.  I know I am doing something wrong; anybody have an idea what might be causing this?

Short circuit, too little resistance between the + and - on your battery (probably near zero R short).

If at first you don't succeed... use bigger transistors!

Yep, definitely a short somewhere.  Disconnect fast and check your wiring and board.
