Your thoughts about knobs

Hi guys !

All my pots are like these, with the knurled shaft.

All knobs I looked at on Tayda's site mention "for round shaft" or "with set screw", which makes me think they're for smooth shafted pots, not for knurled shafts.

Any ideas if I can still use Tayda's knobs with my pots ? I like the Davies ones ...

I use set screw knobs with theose pots and maybe one in a hundred will slip and be slightly crooked. But it's not really a problem.

I'm sorry sir, we only have the regular ohms.

It should work just fine. I have a few on my tayda pots. Mine tend to slip a bit more than I would like but I also don't torque them down that much.

I find it odd that Tayda doesn't sell the proper knobs for their pots.

Smallbear has a good selection though.

Cut a piece of drinking straw long enough to fit over the knurled shaft of the pot.

Put the knob on over the straw and tighten down the set screw. The set screw will pierce the straw and grab the knurled shaft.

This will act as a sleeve and take up some of the play between the shaft and the knob.

The straw also fits on the shaft snuggly which keeps the whole assembly from moving when the set screw is tightened.

That's a good idea.  The main problem with set screw knobs on knurled shafts is the diameter mismatch.  Set screw knobs are usually for 1/4" (6.35mm) shafts whereas knurled shaft pots like those that Tayda sells are 6mm.  The result is that the center axes are not aligned, which results in the knob looking like it's wobbling as it's turned, unless you do something about it.

use the retaining lug you snip off, and put it between the shaft gap...voil'a no squeeze... ;)

The straw is a great idea -I've just been wrapping some masking tape round. The other thing is to put a thin strip of something in the gap between the 2 sections of the shaft. This prevents the possibility of the screw compressing the gap, the pressure being lost and the knob coming off and rolling under the sideboard with all the rest of them...

Edit. Rob you're too quick and what a good idea about the retaining lug!

I guess I should've bought smooth shafted pots when I started this hobby  :(

Try the straw idea.

I saw this post...recognized the issue...and started thinking  ???

Went to the kitchen to grab a straw, cut a piece off, slid it over a pot on a build of mine, grabbed a knob, put it on, tightened it up......

and thought......viola!!!!! We have something here!!! and then posted the idea.

I think it's a fix!

I can't find "drinking straws" on Tayda's site  :D

I'll give that a try, thanks Larry !

Also thanks to Rob for the snipped lug idea !

Unfortunately, one of our least expensive parts suppliers sells only the split shaft, knurled type.

They do.

If you put the straw on and then Rob's retaining lug after, the shaft is spread just a touch and the knob fits even tighter.

You know that little tab you break off the pots and discard?  Shove that little tab in the split shaft.  It will ever so slightly expand the shaft, and allow you more torque on the set screw, and I think the knobs for round shaft pots will fit a bit better.
