I tried the Wilko's clear coat but it yellowed and started to flake within a few days.  That was sprayed direct to the aluminium after a good clean with some Acetone (well, the girlfriends nail varnish remover).

You might find that the Wilko's clear coat reacted with the other additives in your GF's nail varnish remover. Primarily acetone, yes, but significant quantities of things like lanolin (used to replace the natural oils present in her fingernails that the acetone also strips away). It might, therefore, be an idea to try that clear coat again, but this time using pure acetone instead as a cleaning agent?

Boom I learnt something more right there thanks mr Tiree.
I looked at the wife's nail varnish remover and it contains many additives. I'll look into acetone now.
Suggestions for places to buy to buy it would be welcome.

Any pharmacist should be able to hook you up with a small pot, Rich. That's where I get mine...

Ah nice one Tiree, I'll give it another go. I do remember 2 or 3 more other ingredients in her nail varnish remover when I looked on the back, so it must be something there.  I'll have to get some pure acetone too! Cheers.

Look on eBay and you can buy a litre of acetone for about £12-15 including delivery.

In tescos pharamcy it's £1.50 for a tiny bottle. Apparantly, pharmacies need a special license to sell it, only found it out when my local boots can't sell it but bigfer ones do. And don't forget to wear gloves, it will make your nails extremely brittle and dry your hands. I also spilt some on my laptop charger, and it made the hard plastic go soft! It's nasty stuff!

I use it to clean my enclosures before powder coating them, and the amount of crap that comes off them is amazing!

Just my opinion, but stick with the £1.50 bottle from the chemist (what I paid for mine). A little goes a long way and unless you are painting boxes on a near industrial scale it will last you about a year. The stuff is highly inflammable and volatile? Gives off fumes, not something you want to store in large quantities domestically. Use sparingly in a well ventilated area too.

Yes, whatever you wipe the box over with will be black with grease and contaminants if you use this stuff, its pretty poor metal, but serves its purpose for us, convenient sizes, easy to drill...
