Tone Freaks Severe

Jim this is one for you too.
I'm trying to find  a schemo first off.
I found a couple but both look drasitcally differant so I'm canvassing opinions for a good schematic please

heres an old thread that touches on it

Guitar fx has a layout for it if that helps

You can see the similarity to the crunch box except for the clipping... Maybe a switch to to toggle from crunch box to severe? I haven't seen that one yet?!
Doesn't matter what you did to get it... If it sounds good, then it is good!

Kipper4

Jim did you build the version on page 2 of this thread "one of the many schematics etc"?

http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=97044.40

or did you build the one from the blog you posted earlier in the thread?

I built one tonight and it sounds more like a crunchbox than a severe. built from Rick Violas schematic

i think i made a gaff somewhere because i'm not getting that modern sound i was expecting from the severe.

I can tell you that the Severe is not based on the crunchbox, Derek told me what it's derived from. But I have a non-disclosure agreement that I have to honor, so I can't say any more than that...

I built a lot of those Severe pedals - from the time they were introduced to about the beginning of 2011 I was the one who built them.

Kipper4

Gutted. Thanks for the input.
So I guess I'm barking up the wrong tree. That's a shame I'd really like to build it.
Thanks Paul

I do like the Severe a lot, it's really responsive to your playing for a high gain pedal (or what some people would call "touch sensitive"). Cleans up fairly well just by controlling how hard you strum/pick too - kind of like plugging straight into amp.

Looks like a modified tube screamer to me, but then again what doesn't.

Did you try the tagboard layout and/or compare the part values?

Kipper4

No but I will.
I once built a SOS with green and yellow LEDs that had a special sound. :)
I have some thinking to do. Ill go look at the governer too.
How frustrating

SOCJOD is surely the superior mojo tone.

You did you two Germaniums and 1 silicon for one of the clipping options correct?

It's not a modified TS either (the Severe).

But it has an Dual Op Amp and Soft Clipping

Surely its YATS!

There is a whole thread on "another forum" complete with gut shots of 3 different versions of the severe... Am I missing something? ::) And by the way, I said "similar to the crunch box".... that's open to judgment.. There are obvious differences of which I like better than the CB. They are very similar in my opinion which amounts to not much. I could add a couple switches to move the clipping from ground to the feedback loop of the frist opamp... some minor value adjustments etc and shazam, it's a crunch box/it's a severe... The pics are there and they don't lie :icon_wink:
Doesn't matter what you did to get it... If it sounds good, then it is good!

OK, I'm just an idiot. I have no idea what I'm talking about and Derek, the owner of Tonefreak, didn't personally tell me what it's based on. And I never saw the actual schematic for it. And I made up that I was the one who built a couple of the pedals in his line up for almost three years, amounting to several hundred units. I'll let everyone continue on their path of misinformation.

Just for the record, there are two versions of the Severe that I know of between their inception and early 2011. The only difference between them was in what was used for clipping and that's it.

Kipper4

Thanks for that Paul perhaps you'd like to help now then.
